Back to Basics by Living Green...

Get back to basics. Learn to live a natural life, a green life, a simple life...learn to find happiness in simplicity. This is my journey towards the life that I want...A simple life, a frugal life, a natural life, a green life, a most peaceful life...

What We Do Now

  • Use cloth bags when shopping.
  • We use Ivory Soap, baking soda and vinegar to wash laundry. They are less expensive and not toxic, as commercial detergents are.
  • I sew some of our clothing and what I don't sew we buy used, as this cuts down on our exposure to the chemicals on new clothing
  • We avoid processed foods and cook most everything "from scratch"
  • We are a "chemical free" home. Baking soda, vinegar, Dr. Bronners soap and a pumice stone serve our needs just fine!
  • I use the Diva Cup instead of pads or tampons
  • We have free range chickens for eggs. I haven't had the heart to slaughter any for meat yet!
  • We use "family cloth"
  • We do not use papertowel but instead use cloth napkins and dish towels
  • We use cloth diapers
  • We, as much as humanly possible, do not use plastic in our home. This includes not using plastic garbage bags.
  • We recycle our plastic, paper, glass and cans
  • We compst any and everything that can be composted
  • What we cannot grow, we buy locally from the Mennonite Farmer's Market
  • We have two large gardens and try to grow as much of our own food as possible
  • We freeze and home can the food we grow so that we can eat it during the winter months.

My Immediate Goals

  • To find an affordable source for organic/free range beef. We own our own chickens but have not found a beef source.
  • More outside time for my kids (and myself). I am not an outdoor person. My kids seem to take after me.
  • Hang at least half of my clothes out to dry instead of using the dryer

My Long Term Goals

  • Find and use an alternative fuel source for our vehicles. Due to where we live, public transportation is non-existant
  • To have a composting septic system
  • To be off of the electric grid by using solar and wind power
